Standard for Environmental Management – ISO 14000

June 5th, 2007 · by Peter · No Comments · Economic Development, Environment

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which is an NGO and the worlds largest developer of standards has created ISO 14000, the Environmental Management standards. These standards created in 2002 aim to address the need of businesses and governments to meet new requirements such as greenhouse gas verification (climate change mitigation) and many other aspects of sustainable development.

ISO standards are long and confusing but in this case once you get through all the ink you will find efforts being made to understand the environmental impact of a given product or service throughout its lifespan and creating standards in a holistic assessment; from raw material production, manufacturing, distribution, disposal, and to all intervening transportation steps.
