A Ride Over London in the 21st Century Ferris Wheel

June 20th, 2007 · by Peter · No Comments · Cities, Economic Development, Field Trips, Travel

Here are some shots from our June 10th ride on the London Eye. Also dubbed the “millennium wheel” it was intended to be a temporary structure that would only stay a few years, but because it quickly became the most visited site in London the timeline has been extended indefinitely.

Architects David Marks and Julia Barfield conceived the project in the early 1990’s. They entered their design, better described as an observation wheel, in a millennium design competition, but no winner was ever selected. Their project gained real momentum when the airline company British Airways signed on as the lead sponsor. The project was 100% commercially funded at a cost of £85 million. Today the attraction averages 10,000 visitors a day, with an average ticket price of £14.50.

The views were awesome from every part of the rotation. Our trip was on a partly sunny day with a little summer haze so I am not posting any of the aerial shots. To learn more about the London Eye visit their web site at www.londoneye.com
