7 or so years ago, Sarah Meyer and I, as part of an independent art project we’d dubbed “Bike Baby Bike”, took over a piece of asphault roughly the size of a parking spot. We rolled out sod to cover the area, put our change in the meter, and pulled out our beach chairs to enjoy the urban scenery.
We weren’t the first, and we certainly weren’t the last. In fact, today is PARK(ing) day, a annual event started three years ago encouraging artists and activists to “collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks”.
On their website they’ve got how-to tips, a map of PARK(ing) spots in the San Francisco area (I counted 60 or so), and information on how to organize and support a PARK(ing) day event in your area.
