Ohio ad- Harry Wilks

Tomorrow my grandfather, Harry Wilks, will be in the Wall Street Journal. OK, so it will be in an advertisement for Ohio, but still it’s kind of cool.

The text of the ad talks about his beginnings in investment and business, and his great success in his entrepreneurial endeavors. And then it goes on to talk about his generosity and dedication to philanthropy. This includes, among many other interesting programs and contributions, the establishment of Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in my mom’s hometown of Hamilton Ohio, where most of the Wilks family still resides.

Pyramid Hill is worth a visit if you ever find yourself in or around Cincinnati. It’s a 265 acre sculpture park and “outdoor museum”, with some impressive examples of modern large-scale outdoor works. My grandfather lives at the park, in the wild underground house in which he’s pictured above on the left.

It’s always inspiring to visit my grandfather. It’s amazing to think all he’s accomplished even just since his retirement, including the establishment of one of the largest outdoor sculpture parks in the country.

His example also sparks a larger conversation about the future of philanthropy. There are some exciting emerging models for giving and investing in social change out there. It’s been almost a year since I gave my first loans via Kiva.org, and I’m excited to say all of the small businesses I invested in are on track. I look forward to finding my own ways to change the world, as my life unfolds.
