Plastic Is On Its Way Out In New York City – Hopefully

January 9th, 2008 · by Peter · No Comments · Cities, Economic Development, Environment, Recycling, Urban Planning

The New York City Council voted today to approve new legislation that would hopefully start reducing the plastic waste that strangles New York City and most of the world. The basic intention of the law is to get New Yorkers to recycle plastic packing and bags. Next time you walk around New York City take notice of the extreme amount of packaging, especially disposable bags that New Yorkers grip to like a security blanket. It is absolutely disgusting.

New York City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn though the most effective way to address the plastic dilemma facing the City would be to regulate and encourage recycling, as opposed to banning plastic bags, the approach other Cities like San Francisco have adopted.

This seems like a good first step for the City that never sleeps. Imaging the waste a City that never sleeps generates - scary.
