WikiLeaks – Documents Available For Public Analysis

The Associated Press and New York Times covered a great story about a federal judges attempt to shut down an on-line site which allows anybody to post documents; mainly un-told stories, leaks, and private information for all the world to see. WikiLeaks describes itself as a web-tool that is developing an uncensorable system for untraceable mass document leaking and public analysis. Seems a little dissident, possibly dangerous, and definitely exciting.

The case started when a Cayman Island bank, The Bank Julius Baer & Co found that an ex-employee posted information about its tax shelter methods, and other quasi-financial schemes. Needless to say when the bank got wind of this they went after the site. Having no real owners the site is pretty safe from attack, so they went after the domain registrar, Dynadot.

In another great twist to the story, the U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White, who succeeded in getting Dynadot to shut down the domain name resolution, overlooked the basic working of domain names, and internet protocol. Even though you can no longer go to the home page at http://wikileaks.org, the rest of the site is still up. This is because all names resolve to an internet protocol address or IP address which in WikiLeaks case is http://88.80.13.160. Oops…

Anyway, do you think a collaboration of people that have in its missions the words uncensored and untraceable would not have a back up plan? HA, the site has also registered domains in other countries like; wikileaks.be, wikileaks.de, and wikileaks.cx, to name a few.
