The St. Lawrence Arts and Community Center in Portland has begun deconstructing its sanctuary. The historic Congregational Church on Congress Street began its transformation into a community arts center in 1998. The first phase of the project included the renovation of a small 100-seat theatre that is now used for theatre performance, music, church worship, and community events.
The sanctuary building finally reached an unreturnable point of disrepair and received a permit for deconstruction. The current plan calls for a new building to be built on the site of the sanctuary, it will most likely mimic the historic form of the building and incorporate new and salvaged materials.
To support this project please visit the St. Lawrence web site and consider donating money or time. Thanks!
