Hello!

I am the very proud first intern ever at Port City Studios! And I am so very thrilled to be here. I’m going to be a senior at Bates College in Lewiston this fall. I attended Connecticut College for my first two years of college (where I assembled a great little toolbox of design skills), before transferring to Bates. Having grown up in Maine, I found it hard to be away from the snowy winters and friendly locals. I’m an Art and Visual culture major at Bates, concentrating in photography and design. I was introduced to book art while at ConnColl and instantly fell in love with it.

This summer I took the plunge and left my job as a sailing instructor (I’d been teaching at TPYC in Auburn for six years) to pursue an internship in the graphic arts. So, here I am, living totally on my own (no dining hall to make me food or no parents to help with dishes, laundry or ANYTHING!) And at the start of my third week down here– I am still alive, thanks to peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches. Portland might be one of the more wonderful places around, everything is within biking distance, the neighborhoods are charming, the nightlife is hoping, and the people are very welcoming.

Here at Port City Studios I will be taking photographs of summer projects, Eli Phant merchandise, and happenings in the arts around Portland. I’ve already been thrown right into design projects with Sally, designing identities, brainstorming on book ideas, and creating fliers and invites for Sally and Peter’s many community organisations. Peter and Sally have already set the tone for the summer– and I can tell you I won’t be your average coffee fetching intern. I’ll even be posting on the blog here and there. I think we’re off to a great start and I’ve already learned an awful lot, from Adobe tricks to how to meet with a client and present your work!
